If you’re planning to have a quiet stroll through the park this weekend, don’t be surprised to see hundreds of people dressed as Father Christmas racing past.

For the first time, Harrow Lodge Park, Hornchurch, will be hosting a 5k Santa fun run/walk to raise money for Essex Air Ambulance.

The event, taking place on Sunday, has been organised by Fayre Trade, a crafts event company run by Jason Ord and his wife Lisa, who decided to try something different while helping to raise money for charity.

“It is our first stab at something a bit different,” Jason told the Recorder.

“The majority of our events have been craft fairs around Hornchurch, to Southend, to Chelmsford and we are branching out into other things.

“We did one of the runs in central London last year and we looked into the local area to see if there was one.

“We saw there was a gap in the area so we thought let’s do one.”

Jason, of Upminster, decided to locate the run in Harrow Lodge Park because it already has a 5k route which runners use every Saturday, although he will be too busy overseeing the event to participate himself.

“Hornchurch has a nice park, I go there some weeks, and I thought it would be good for a 5k,” he said.

“I will be starting the race and helping to organise everything but my wife will be walking it and we have 10 friends doing it as well.

“Once the run is finished we might do a little jog around the park at the end.”

Money raised from the event will be donated to Essex Air Ambulance and so far 78 people have booked their places, however, Jason has called for more people to get on board and help a great cause.

“Come along to raise a nice bit of money for the Essex Air Ambulance and to have a bit of fun and a laugh. If we can get a hundred we will be happy,” he said.

“It will also help us learn how to improve on the event for next year and we will see if we can do something similar for Easter and in the summer.”

It costs £16 to book your place, visit fayre-trade.co.uk/products/hornchurch-santa-run to guarantee yourself a Santa suit, or you can turn up on the morning.
