Harry Irons, from Hornchurch will be in Hornchurch Library in North Street on Saturday March 23 at 2pm.

Harry, 89, who served with Bomber Command, joined the RAF at the age of 16 and became a rear gunner on Lancaster bombers with No 9 Squadron.

He later flew Halifaxes with 158 Squadron and completed an amazing 60 operational sorties over Europe and Germany.

The position of rear-gunner was a very dangerous task, as the German night-fighters always tried to take out the rear-gunner first.

Harry said: “Not many chaps survived more than three or four trips, so I consider myself very lucky.”

Harry recently led a four year fight to get a memorial created in Green Park, London to the men of RAF Bomber Command.

Joining Harry will be aviation artist Barry Weekley, RAF Hornchurch historian and author Richard Smith and archaeologist Colin Lee.

Tickets cost £5 from Richard Smith on 01708-523409.
