The engraved names of 387 Romford war dead are back on display after 20 years hidden from sight.

One hundred and forty-one civilians and 246 service personnel who died during the Second World War are commemorated on the oak panels at the Romford War Memorial Social Club.

The panels had been shut away for two decades as the building around them fell into disrepair – but Jai Sepple last month led a cleanup operation that has seen them returned to their rightful place.

It’s part of a major renovation project that will see the club reopened later this year in time for its 60th anniversary.

“Displaying the boards is kind of what we’ve been aiming for,” said Jai. “It’s the biggest part of everything we’ve been doing for the past two years.

“The club was built to commemorate the people whose names appear on there and they’ve been locked up for so long.”

And the restored panels will be protected for future generations after a thousand-pound donation from Lawrence Bird of LBS Shutters – a smart new roller cover to safeguard the entrance to the building after hours.
