At the age of 82, most people might think about putting their feet up. But since the age of 67, one Gidea Park man has been indulging his passion for painting.

Fred Praver has built up a catalogue of approximately 50 paintings since he retired as an electrical contractor and he shows no signs of slowing down.

Fourteen of his creations adorn the walls of Queen’s Hospital and he also made an oil painting of Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch, in September to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Mr Praver, of Eyre Close, said: “I have enjoyed doing my art.

“It is still a wonderful relaxation.”

The painter has won prizes in the Havering 60+ Artist of the Year competitions, with best overall painting in 2006 and best portrait of the year (in oils) in 2001. He attends classes with the Studio One art group, based in Hornchurch’s Fairkytes Arts Centre.

Mr Praver, who has a wife Betty, 82, three daughters and five grandchildren, spends two to three weeks on each painting. He said: “As far as I’m concerned, I shall carry on painting until I can’t hold a paintbrush; I love it.

“It is my whole life, apart from my family.”
