Romford businesses got together for a good cause at a fundraising event aiming to raise money for a brave Hornchurch cancer sufferer.

The event aimed to raise money for seven-year-old Joni-Mai Stevens, who is battling cancer for the second time, and took place at the Ingrebourne centre, Gubbins Lane on April 16.

There was be a bouncy castle and a football goal, face painting for children and a guest appearance from singer Lydia Lucy, who signed autographs.

Local businesses set up stalls there, including Sugar and Spice Bows, Jessy’s Boutique, Bugs and Butterflies, Evie Rose Clothes and Bows, Lilabelles and Macey Bags and Jewellery.

The “family fun day” was organised by Lauren Burgess, who was there with her Bella Me stall.

“I’m going to be there, I’m a nail technician,” Lauren said.

Lauren explained that all she had to take out of the total raised was the cost of the hall and the advertising, and everything else would be going to Joni.

“I don’t really have a lot of money to give to charity, so I just wanted to give something back,” she said.

Lauren explained that after seeing stories on Facebook about Joni-Mai, she felt she wanted to help.

“I just wanted to do it for her”.

Lauren said that while she had not spoken directly to Joni’s parents yet, she had spoken to other family members through the social networking site.

Speaking about how Joni’s family felt about the fundraising, Lauren said: “They were just really thankful.”
