Persistence has paid off for MP Andrew Rosindell, who has won a long-standing battle in Westminster regarding the Commonwealth flags.

Thanks to the Romford poltician’s suggestions in the House of Commons, the flags will now be raised in Parliament Square for the duration of this month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Mr Rosindell, a staunch royalist, first brought the topic to light in November 2012, when he proposed flying the flags more frequently.

He was told then that there were no plans for them to be displayed on a more regular basis, but raised the issue twice more this March, after the flags were not flown on Commonwealth Day due to pavement repair work.

He intervened again following the Trooping the Colour last month, proposing the flags remain out - and his wish was finally granted by culture secretary Sajid Javid.

“I proposed this to the Secretary of State,” explained Mr Rosindell. “We should fly them in celebration of the Commonwealth Games. To take them down would be ridiculous when the Commonwealth Games are about to begin!”
