A couple who had a fairytale meeting when one fell on some stairs and the other reached out and caught her, celebrated 60 years of marriage on Thursday.

George Bamsey, 83 and Jean Bamsey, 82, of McIntosh Road, celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary with family.

“We’ve been celebrating since yesterday and I think it’s going to go on all weekend. We had all the family here yesterday,” Jean said on Friday.

“I have been crying since yesterday really because all the flowers have been coming in.”

George and Jean met in a theatre “somewhere on the Strand, on Charing Cross Road”, where George caught her as she fell.

The pair would see each other at the weekends when they went out dancing with friends. Eventually romance blossomed.

Because George lived in West Ham and Jean lived in Wembley they would compromise by meeting in Trafalgar Square.

“It was quite a romantic setting,” said Jean.

They married in Willesden in 1954 and went on to have three children, called Jackie, Sally and Gareth and nine grandchildren.

Asked what the secret is to a long and happy marriage Jean replied “We are very close. We argue but it’s nice to make up. We’re soul mates really.”
