Violet and Albert Key celebrate their 74th wedding anniversary with a card from the Queen

A couple from Romford who celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary yesterday may just be the longest married pair in Havering.

“We must be getting on that way mustn’t we?” says Albert Key, 96, of Glenton Close.

Mr Key and his wife, Violet, 93, met when they both lived in London as teenagers, just before he was called up to the army at the start of the Second World War in 1939.

“She worked just around where I used to work as a butcher,” Mr Key explained.

“I used to see a lot of her and we just stopped and started chatting and that’s how it carried on.”

They married in a small ceremony with six guests at a registry office in Angel, Islington, when Mr Key was on leave in 1940.

He continued to serve as an army tank driver in North Africa and Monte Cassino, Italy, until the war ended.

At the end of the conflict Mr Key came home to spend the rest of his life with Violet and their daughter, Christine, who was almost three.

“I am still driving at 96,” said Mr Key.

“It’s a Renault Megane Sport, but I couldn’t drive a tank now.”

When asked what the secret was to a long and happy marriage, Mr Key said that, unsurprisingly, he gets asked the question all the time.

“I think the best way to carry on is to give in most of the time,” he explained.

“I just turn around and say ‘yes dear, yes dear’ because I don’t like arguing.

“We still have our little tiffs and dos and don’ts but that’s natural isn’t it?”
