With youth unemployment at a worrying high, one business is bucking the trend while making it work for themselves too.

Total Assist in Eastern Road, Romford, has been a recruitment agency for 11 years but as of last October they have looked to employ youths which may have been struggling to find employment or education elsewhere for their own company which is undergoing a sudden growth, according to CEO Grant Finn.

The firm have been bringing them in as apprentices or trainees and giving them a mix of classroom and practical training before giving them permanent jobs.

Mr Finn said: “We find that they are some of the greatest ones and they are so grateful for the work so hard working and want to learn. They don’t come in through the door feeling like they know everything.

“Now they are some of our brightest staff.”

One of their success stories is that of Brookland Witham, 21, of Chadwell Heath who joined the recruitment sales academy in October. She is now a fully-fledged employee.

She said: “It’s been brilliant. I am loving working with all the people and they have been really supportive.

“I have gained a lot of experience and I don’t think I would’ve been able to do it without the academy. It’s improved my confidence as well.”

A new member of the academy Michael Sylvester, 21, of Harold Hill, was previously finding it hard to get work.

He said: “I was in college studding forensic science. I struggled to get a job afterwards as people didn’t want to take the risk, this was the first place that did.”

Ellysee Derick at just 16-years-old describes herself as the “baby” of the new intake.

Miss Derick, of Hornchurch, said: “It’s been an amazing week. I’ve learned so much since I’ve been here that will help me later on in life.”

Mr Finn said that they wish to recruit another 30 this year.
