The Rev Michael Hore, who bravely battled Motor Neurone Disease (MND) for six years while continuing to tend his flock, was buried in the church he loved yesterday.

The brave vicar, who was left virtually paralysed and kept alive by a ventilator, used voice recognition software to write the sermons which his wife, Rosalind, would deliver at Saint Laurence Church, Corbets Tey Road, Upminster.

Last month, Mr Hore, described by a fellow minister as a “Rolls-Royce parish priest”, slipped into a coma and quietly passed away while surrounded by friends and family.

Mrs Hore said: “When he passed, he was surrounded by clergymen and love.

“The response has been overwhelming - we have received hundreds of cards and the house is full of flowers.”

Mr Hore did not give up upon hearing the news, in 2008, of his terminal illness, choosing instead to carry on his church duties and write a blog to share his thoughts on life and death.

The Rt Revd Stephen Cottrell, Bishop of Chelmsford, delivered Mr Hore his last rights and also led his funeral service.

Mr Cottrell said: “I would always describe him as a Rolls-Royce parish priest - the best you can get, somebody whose hold life was dedicated to service of the community and the church.

“He’s remarkable and has taught us a something about human values. We should judge a person not for what they do but for who they are.

“He’s an inspiring example to all of us. We all face restrictions in one way or another and how we deal with them is the great challenge.”

Mr Hore was born in London in 1950, was missionary in Zambia for three years, and served in parishes across the south of England including Goring-by-Sea, Maidstone and Broadstairs.

Rev Kevin Skippon, who assisted Mr Hore in running the parish, will take care of Saint Laurence’s as caretaker rector.
