I’ve got to admit, when I was younger I never considered American singer Barbra Streisand to be very “cool”.
And the fact I was dragged along to a concert of hers by my super fan mum at the O2 when I was 13-years-old was even less cool.
But as soon as the music to Don’t Rain On My Parade started playing to everyone’s delight, I couldn’t help but sing along and by the end of the night I was hooked on Barbra.
Since then, I’ve been a secret fan of hers so when I got invited to watch Woman in Love, a tribute stage show to Ms Streisand and her music at the Queen’s Theatre, Billet Lane, Hornchurch, I couldn’t have been more excited.
As it is a tribute show, put on by Total Productions, you never know if the singer is going to sound anything like the real thing and the thought did cross my mind as Winter, the star of Woman in Love, first came on stage.
But the doubts of whether she could live up to those expectations evaporated as soon as she started to sing.
From Memories and Yentel’s Piece of Sky, to Funny Girl and, one of my personal favourites, My Man, Winter went through her varied repertoire and sung them in a way that took me back to the concert when I was 13.
Accompanied by a live band, not only did her voice sound similar to that of Barbra herself, Winter is also a great singer in her own right, belting out some of the audience’s favourite songs and making them feel every word.
Anecdotes of how Ms Streisand rose to fame as well as stories of her personal life were also told which made the evening even more fun and interesting.
The tribute show was at the theatre sadly for one night only but it will be travelling around the country to entertain fans with the music of Barbra.
Woman in Love was a brilliant success and a great tribute to the legend herself.
