Residents warned to be on guard against fake fundraisers in Harold Hill

17:17 05 June 2014

Phoney fundraisers have been attempting to con a woman into giving money to a charity they claim to represent.

The Harold Hill resident says she has had “charity collectors” call on her twice in two days, asking her to donate to “The St Martin-in-the-Fields Adelaide Street Shelter.”

The charity The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields, who operate from Adelaide Street in London, say that these “collectors” are nothing to do with the charity and is warning people of the scam.

The Connection at St Martin’s charity works with the homeless and issues surrounding homelessness, providing a night centre and street outreach services to those in need.

Charity fundraising officer Sonja Ashbury said: “This is the first we have heard of it - when this lady called. We have no registered collectors in that area.” She added: “Our services are free to access.”

Those who want to donate to the charity should call 020 7766 5555.
