Residents evacuated from homes due ‘underground electrical fire’ in Park Lane, Hornchurch

PUBLISHED: 11:11 11 April 2014 | UPDATED: 13:50 11 April 2014

Residents were evacuated from their homes this morning due to a suspected underground electrical fire.

The emergency services were called to Park Lane, Hornchurch, at around 8.40am after smoke was seen billowing from the middle of the road.

Fire crews tackled the blaze which became “quite intense at one stage” but they have now “probably been stood down”, a police spokesman said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

UK Power Network said in a statement: “Engineers are currently working hard to restore power to five customers in Park Lane following a fault on an underground cable in the area.

Power was originally interrupted to 24 customers at about 1am today, however at about 8.40am, while repairs were being carried out, smoke was spotted coming from the pavement.

For safety reasons electricity supplies to a further 48 customers were isolated and the cause of the smoke is currently being investigated.

The majority of customers have now had their supplies returned to normal and we are working hard to ensure the remaining customers have their electricity restored as soon as we can.

We realise how difficult it can be to be without power and apologise for any inconvenience.”
