Generous shoppers in Rainham and South Hornchurch donated more than a tonne of food to a local food bank last weekend.

Rainham food bank, based in the Mardyke Community Centre, South Street, benefited from collections at two branches of Tesco earlier this month – and South Hornchurch councillor Michael Deon Burton said he was impressed by people’s generosity.

“I’ve been humbled by the response of local people,” he said.

Tesco will add 30 per cent to the final total of donations – more than 1250kg of tinned, dried and long-life food.

“Rainham food bank has seen record numbers in the last six months,” added Cllr Burton. “It’s already fed 600 local people this year.”

Tesco stores across the country were collecting for food banks during the first weekend of December. Havering also has food banks in Collier Row and Harold Hill.
