Frances and John Green, 82 and 81-years-old, of Betterton Road, Rainham, were overjoyed as they were sent a letter from the Queen, congratulating them on their 60 years of marriage.

Frances said: “We were thrilled to see that we got a letter. It’s not like you get a letter from the Queen everyday!”

The couple met in 1953 in Yalding in Kent where they went to take part in picking hops which are flowers used to make beer.

She said: “When I first met him, he was very big headed. He just had that look about him and that kind of cocky walk that a lot of boys had.

“But for some strange reason I fell for him.”

The pair tied the knot in 1954 at St Mary and Michael’s church in Stepney and soon after moved to Rainham and had two children.

John said: “I think the secret to a long and happy marriage has a lot to do with perseverance and understanding one another.”
