More than 100 residents turned out on Sunday for a funeral-inspired protest against an impending gravel extraction site.

Plans for a new site in Wennington Farm have been slammed by locals who claim the increased traffic would bring mud and dirt to the roads and spell the end of Wennington village.

The funeral-inspired walk along Wennington Road was slightly more colourful than campaigners had hoped, after their efforts to encourage people to dress in all black fell flat.

But the theme was supported by a truck carrying a coffin to symbolise the “death of the village” and Graham Williamson of Adamsgate action group believes the protest went “very well.”

He said: “We had 50 or so people in Wennington and another 50 or so in Rainham. Some of them didn’t do the walk, because it’s quite long, but it was almost like two rallies.

“We believe it was a success, and we have to keep the public abreast of the situation. We’ve already had a petition signed by more than 1,000 people and we will be outside the town hall protesting when it eventually gets discussed at the planning meeting.”

The plans submitted to the council would see digging for eight and a half years.
