Year five pupils from St Edward’s Primary School, Havering Drive, Romford, visited St Edward’s School & Sixth Form College, London Road, Romford, to take part in a day of science activities.

The children got to carry out experiments on a hamburger to find out its starch and sugar content, they took part in a “lab cola” experiment, recreating the drink, and they solved a jewellery theft in a forensics investigation.

The year five’s also watched a liquid nitrogen demonstration from Dr Stuart Gardner, who instantly froze lilies, a ping-pong ball and a banana, which was later used to hammer a nail.

School & Sixth Form head of science Steve Tomlinson said: “The day was organised to foster links with St Edward’s Primary School. It was a fantastic opportunity for them because in one day they saw so many experiments.”

After experimenting on a burger, year five pupil Tijesunimi Ewedemi thought about giving up fast food.

Headteacher Rev Alan Perry said: “It was a very successful event and some of them are now looking forward to coming to our school.”

Pupils got the chance to experiment with static electricity and got to see how science works in every day life.

Mr Tomlinson added: “They have all gone away, some of them, dreaming of being scientists.”
