A charity has launched an urgent appeal for help in temporarily housing Havering’s young homeless.

Nightstop, a scheme that places vulnerable young people in people’s spare rooms to save them having to sleep rough, currently has no hosts in the borough - and charity workers fear it may be linked to a lack of awareness about the scale of the problem.

Across the Thames in Greenwich, Nightstop - which is run by charity Depaul UK - has around eight hosts to Havering’s none.

Recently, scheme co-ordinators had to turn away “a young girl from Romford”, who was spotted in Romford Market, because they had no spare rooms available that night.

This incident, and a concern residents in the borough may be blind to the level of suffering experienced by some young people, has prompted the charity to appeal for volunteers with spare rooms to get in touch.

Havering Council may be able to help if you are homeless or faced with the threat of homelessness.

Call them on 01708 432824 or visit the Public Advice and Services Centre (PASC) in The Liberty, Romford.
