The Mayor of London has been challenged amid fears Havering residents will have to pick up the bill for new river crossings.

Havering’s London Assembly Member, Keith Prince, quizzed Sadiq Khan at Mayor’s Question Time this morning stating he “must come clean” over possible tolls on river crossings in east London.

Mr Khan told the Conservative assembly member that tolls on the Blackwall Tunnel are being considered as a way of raising money to pay for the Silvertown Tunnel, on which users are also likely to be charged.

Earlier this month, proposals were announced to build a new Silvertown road tunnel, a pedestrian bridge linking Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf, and a Docklands Light Railway line from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead.

The plans would leave east Londoners with no way of crossing the Thames by car without paying a toll charge.

Mr Prince, said: “I certainly welcome new crossings in east London as it’s a nightmare getting across the river from Havering or Redbridge.

“However, under the Mayor’s current proposals, anyone living east of Tower Bridge will have to pay to get across, whilst everyone west of Tower Bridge will not – what exactly does the Mayor have against east Londoners?

“It is vitally important that money is raised to pay for new crossings but, since his grand announcement earlier this month, the Mayor has failed to set out how exactly he intends to fund this new transport infrastructure.”

After raising his concerns today, the Mayor has now agreed to meet with Mr Prince to discuss plans in further detail.

The London Assembly Member added: “Having taken hundreds of millions of pounds from TfL’s budget with his fares freeze and other regrettable policies, I fear it will be down to the people of Havering and other nearby boroughs to cough up the cost of these new projects, which does not seem fair at all.

“The Mayor needs to come clean over his plans for these crossings and I look forward to meeting with him and hearing in more detail how he intends to make them a reality.”

  • Blackwall Tunnel charges....the cameras are already installed. My cousin installed them years ago there. It always has been the plan to charge motorists from, the M25 inwards - all the cameras are in place. You voted for them.....
