It’s neck and neck in the election race as it stands, between the Conservatives and the Residents’ Association.

They each have 16 councillors now, as Cllr June Alexander (3,243), party leader Cllr Clarence Barrett (3,090) and Cllr Gillian Ford (3,159) retained their seats.

As it is tit-for-tat between the two parties Cllr Barrett has said that the councillors must put on their “sensible hats”.

“Our world has been in opposition. This time round we will probably be part of the decision making process.”

He said there will be a blend of “experienced” and “new” councillors from his party, which has not been part of the administration for a long time.

He said: “We have got to put our sensible hats on and deliver what residents need.”

The closest candidate to the runaway party was Ukip’s Mark O’Neil, but he was a good 2,000 votes behind on 1,014.

The turnout in Cranham was 47.5 per cent meaning there was 4,855 votes made.
