Voters across the borough are making their way to polling stations today to have their say on who should be running Havering Council.

To get a head start ahead of the count tomorrow, the Recorder popped down to St Alban’s Church Hall in Princes Road, Romford to find out who the people of Romford Town ward were favouring.

An unusually quiet start to the day saw about one person a minute entering the building, but the numbers increased throughout the morning before the expected peak time of 6pm onwards.

Colin Carter, 62, machine operator: “I voted for one independent and two Conservatives. I’d like to see a bit of change, they should not have got rid of Andrew Curtin.”

Gerald Kavanagh, 79, retired: “I have voted for Conservative for many years and will again, because they seem to be doing a better job than Labour.”

Lindsey Archer, 49, writer, “I voted for the Green Party because I am worried about climate change and I recently changed my energy provider to a more green option. I have voted for them in the past too.”

Marc Clifton, 41, forensic accountant, “I’m voting Ukip to make a statement. It’s the first time I’ve ever voted. I’m sick and tired of being part of the EU and I think we’re full. I’m not racist but I think we’re full. I’ve never voted before but I’ve always had something to say.”

Raymond Tang, 43, manager at the Moon House restaurant, “I voted Conservative because they represent my needs. It is not my first time voting for them.”

Ruben Madila, 29, “I voted for two Labour candidates and one Conseravtive, as a protest vote against Ukip. I’m Spanish and I do want restrictions on immigration but they are doing it the wrong way.”

Yvonne Hudders, 36, solicitor, “I voted Conservative. I come from a northern, Labour family and have voted Labour in the past, my grandad was a Labour councillor. I feel there is very little between the parties. I don’t think it’s time for a change yet, I think they should be given time to finish their policies.”
