The ongoing discussions regarding the control of Havering Council may be finalised shortly, with a minority Conservative administration likely.

Cllr Roger Ramsey, leader of the Conservative party, which won 22 seats at the election, has revealed the Residents’ Association, which won 19 seats, “don’t want to take the administration” and it is likely the Tories will take charge.

He said: “Someone’s got to do it. The number one priority is not to disturb the running of the council. It’s going to be a tough four years with austerity, maybe that’s why they feel apprehensive about getting involved.

“If people stand offering policies the idea is they are in a position to carry them forward. I am shocked and saddened they don’t want to participate.

“If they wanted to put their stamp on the council they had their opportunity to do it.”

Cllr Ramsey will also battle it out with Independent Residents’ Group leader, Cllr Jeff Tucker, for the role of council leader, with a decision due at the council meeting next Wednesday.

“We will see what happens. Jeff is a colourful character but personally I am quite friendly with him,” added Cllr Ramsey.

Cllr Linda Trew will also be announced as mayor at the meeting.

Check back tomorrow for more on the breaking news.
