Traffic will be diverted from the town centre road bewteen Billet Lane and North Street and via Appleton Way.

Cllr Robert Benham, cabinet member for community empowerment, said that the council had spoken to business owners about minimising disruption while the work takes place.

He said: “Closing the road will make the area safer for pedestrians and the diverted traffic will be able to flow through the town easier while work is taking place.”

A council spokesman said that the work is expected to last until “early summer”.
