The British Transport Police appeal comes after a 23-year-old woman fell asleep on the train and was awoken by a man sexually assaulting her.

The assault took place in the early hours of July 25, after the woman boarded the 12.50am train from Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria.

Police are appealing for anyone who knows the whereabouts of the man, who is believed to have boarded a train from Shenfield to Prittlewell before getting on the same service as the woman, to come forward.

Det Con Paul Cudby said: “We have analysed on-board CCTV footage of the incident and are keen to speak to the man in the pictures. I am confident he has key information on this assault.”

Police believe the man may have initially made his way to Shenfield from east London.

The victim and the alleged attacker both left the train at Southend Victoria station.

Det Con Cudby said: “This was an extremely frightening experience for the victim and we need to find the person responsible for this assault as soon as possible.”

Anyone with any information from that morning is being asked to call the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016 quoting reference ESUB/B12 of 25/07/2014.

People can also pass on information anonymously to charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
