A black cabbie is “traumatised” after being robbed of a three-figure sum of cash by two passengers.

The driver had been dropping off two men in High Road, Langdon Hills, Essex, shortly after 2am on Sunday when two men turned on him, threatened him with violence, and forced him to hand over his takings.

He had picked up five young men from Stratford’s Westfield shopping centre at 1:30am, dropped off three in Hornchurch, before taking the others into the Basildon area via the A13.

Investigating Officer, Dc Alex King, said: “As he stopped the vehicle, the two remaining men then carried out the robbery. We are firstly looking to identify the Hornchurch men and ask them to contact us.

“Secondly, we want to hear from any motorists or residents living in High Road who saw this London black cab. The driver lives in east London so does not know the area and so we cannot pinpoint the exact location in High Road.”

All five men are described as white and in their 20s.

The cab driver, who is 36 and comes from Tower Hamlets, in east London, was uninjured but was “recovering from the trauma”, police said.

No weapon was used in the attack.

Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives at Basildon police station on 101.
