An emergency appeal has been launched by St Francis Hospice after the roof of the charity’s building, where the terminally ill are cared for, was seriously damaged by the recent storms.

Staff are currently working under umbrellas and using buckets to catch water, following the damage last week.

The hospice is now urgently asking local people to send a gift of £30 to cover the cost of the repairs and to ensure that the hospice buildings are water-tight for staff, volunteers and patients during the hospice’s 30th anniversary year.

Hospice chief executive Pam Court said: “High winds and heavy rain have seriously damaged the roof of our inpatient unit and other parts of the hospice. The damage is extensive and is having a serious impact on our services for terminally ill patients. It is vitally important and urgent that repairs are made.”

The charity has to raise £17,857 every day to run the hospice with only around one third of its costs met by the NHS.

“We are desperate to avoid paying for the building repairs by dipping into money we have budgeted for patient care,” said Pam. “Everyone at Saint Francis Hospice is determined we should not be blown off course by the recent bad weather and continue providing care and support to more than 4,000 local people affected by a life-limiting illness each year,” said Pam. “Please help us.”

If you can send £30, or as much as you can afford, please send it to Saint Francis Hospice, Storm Damage Appeal, The Hall, Havering-atte-Bower, RM4 1QH.
