The Orchard Village project in Rainham, which is regenerating the former Mardyke Estate, is among a government minister’s favourite redevelopment schemes of recent years.

Planning secretary Nick Boles made the statement in an interview with trade paper Building Design.

Mr Boles called the area “uplifting, fine, bold and human”.

Havering Council’s lead member for the Rainham Compass project, Cllr Michael Armstrong, said: “We are delighted that the secretary of state for planning, Nick Boles, has called Orchard Village one of his favourite regeneration projects.

“We’ve worked closely with Old Ford Housing Association and residents to create high quality and affordable family homes and as work continues and demand increases.

“Praise such as this proves we are on the right track.”
