The new £10 note featuring novelist Jane Austen goes into circulation today.

The plastic tenner features a portrait of the Pride and Prejudice author, who mocked the rich’s love of money and social status in nineteenth-century England.

It has two sets of raised dots on the top left hand corner to help blind and partially sighted people identify its value.

Existing paper tenners, which feature biologist Charles Darwin, can still be used until spring next year.

A polymer fiver was launched last year, with a new £20 note featuring painter JMW Turner coming out in 2020.

The Bank of England says the material makes notes stronger, cleaner and harder to forge.

And coins are being changed too – a 12-sided one pound coin became legal tender in March.

There’s only a month left to spend your old ‘round pounds’. The coins go out of circulation on October 15.
