A 21-year-old man from Harold Hill died on Sunday after being rescued from a lake in Cumbria.
Matthew Joseph had been on holiday in the Lake District with a group of friends. Bystanders pulled out of Coniston Water, in the Lake District, at about 3.55pm, after spotting him “in distress”, police said.
He was taken by air ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital, but tragically he died later that night.
Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.
Sarah Clayton’s daughter, who was Matthew’s best friend, was on holiday with him when the tragedy happened.
“Matt was a fantastic young man,” Sarah told the Recorder. “I am glad to have been in his life and had him in mine.
“He was kind, funny and always polite. I shall truly miss him.”
As news of the tragedy broke, friends took to Twitter to express their grief.
