Elm Park Royal British Legion is hosting a remembrance service on June 22 for father-of-two Ian Fisher. The 42-year-old was killed in action in Helmand province last November.

Ian was a warrant officer class 2 and served with the 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment.

He grew up in Elm Park and went to Sanders School (formerly Sanders Draper) and Havering College – then known as Havering Tech.

The service is being organised with the help of his parents Simon and Helen.

Joanne Stevens, the legion’s poppy appeal organiser for Elm Park and Rainham, said: “He grew up in Elm Park – so we, as an area, should remember the sacrifice he made serving us.”

The parade will begin outside the legion’s base in Maylands Avenue at 11.15am, before proceeding to St Nicholas Church, in Woodcote Avenue, for the service.

The Haverettes All Girls Marching Band and representatives from the guides and scouts will be taking part in the parade.

Band secretary Leanne O’Connell said: “The band are extremely proud to have been asked to take part in the memorial and parade for Ian Fisher.

“It is a real privilege to honour our fallen soldier.”

Representatives from Ian’s regiment and the Deputy Lieutenant of Havering, Colonel Mark Bryant will attend. There will also be representatives from Sanders School and the RJ Mitchell Primary School.

Ian, who had two sons, William and James, was laid to rest in December.

In a statement released after his death, wife Emma said: “Ian will always be the centre of my life. He will be remembered as a doting father, loving husband and a true professional soldier.

“He loved being a soldier – that’s what he lived for. We are all so proud and always will be.”
