Volunteers and autistic youngsters celebrate Autism Sunday at St Albans Church, Romford.

A special church service attended by hundreds of Havering residents marked Autism Sunday.

The day gives thanks to the charities, parents, carers and people with autism and was started in 2002 by Ivan Corea and his wife Charika, who have an autistic son, Charin.

The Sunday Service at St Alban Church of England Church in King Road, Romford, was the fourth event of its kind and Ivan, who teaches at Frances Bardsley School for Girls in Brentwood Road, Romford, said it was an “outstanding service.”

“It was very moving,” he said.

“There were about 100 people with autism there of all different ages from children to young adults in their 20s.”

Autism ambassadors from Frances Bardsley were also in attendance and delighted the crowd with a rendition of Gary Barlow’s jubilee song Sing.

The service was led by Reverend Father Roderick Hingley, vicar of the church.

It was run in partnership with the RIEES Youth Club, UK Autism Foundation, Scripture Union, Romford Autistic Support Group (RAGS) and Romford Baptist Church.

There were also a host of local dignitaries present, such as the Mayor, Cllr Eric Munday and Romford Tory MP Andrew Rosindell.
