Hornchurch Waitrose closes due to poor sales

13:45 08 November 2012

A Hornchurch convenience store closed last week after two years of failing to turn a profit.

Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, closed its doors in High Street and its 41 members of staff were offered the opportunity to work elsewhere in the company.

A spokesman for the company, said: “The decision to close our Hornchurch branch was not one we took lightly, and was made after long and careful consideration.

“We made a major investment with every expectation that the shop would be successful and we understand the disappointment this decision will cause to our customers.

“Despite the best endeavours of our Partners, we have not been able to return a profit.”

Havering Council leader Cllr Michael White, said: “I met with the property division of Waitrose shortly after they announced the closure of their store in Hornchurch.

“Waitrose explained that the closure was related to the format of the store but confirmed that they are still positive about trading in Havering in the future.”

The firm said it will seek a new tenant for the premises and maintain the site’s security until it is sold.
