Hornchurch teenager a cut above as she is crowned trainee of the year

A teenage hairdresser has displayed expert handywork to be crowned trainee of the year having won an annual soiree competition.

Laura Huckstepp, 18, of Hornchurch attends Uppercut Hair Academy in Romford and was recently acknowledged as the best amongst her peers for her Easter-themed hair creation.

The competition involves trainees expressing their imagination by designing and creating a hair and outfit combination based on a theme given to them.

An overjoyed Laura said: “I am still so shocked. I had been practising on my creation for months and my final look was exactly what I wanted. It took me three hours to complete on the day. The competition was extremely competitive. I celebrated with champagne and of course the unopened Easter eggs.

Laura “excelled in all aspects of design and creative thinking” according to Maxine Parry, manager of the hair group.

She added: “The models hair including back combing to create a nest of hair, which included butterflies, flowers and hidden chocolate easter eggs. She even included flashing fairy lights within the hair.”

The competition is now in its 30th year, and was attended by more than 100 staff members.
