Hornchurch driver hit in the face by his own car bonnet

The last thing you expect to see while driving along an A-road at 60mph is your own bonnet hurtling towards you.

But that was the case for Adam Clements when his flipped over the windscreen of his BMW Z4, smashing a side window and hitting him in the face.

Adam, 23, of Hornchurch, was travelling home from work in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, on Friday when the bonnet catch on his car was released, leading him to slam on the brakes and pull on to the hard shoulder of the A21.

He said: “I am lucky to be in one piece - I was close to a crash. Luckily I am an experienced driver and did not panic too much. I managed to limp into the slow lane to safety in a state of flux with a lump protruding from my head and blood down my face.”

After the close shave, which left his car needing more than £1,000 worth of repairs, he went into the Sytner Harold Wood BMW dealership in Colchester Road where he was told BMW could not help as the car had not had a main dealer service for four years.

The shocked owner said: “All I want is to get my car back on the road with the roof down but I’m stuck with a repair bill that’s ridiculous. I would not expect this to happen on any car no matter the make.”

A BMW spokesman said: “We have never known anything like this. It is a 10-year-old car that we haven’t seen for four years so we don’t know what state it is in. It is not really an issue for BMW.

“Although it must not be pleasurable to be hit in the face by a bonnet, there is no known issue like this for either generation of the Z4.”
