The deputy leader of the council, who also chairs the Hornchurch and Upminster Conservatives, has said he wants to make it clear his association is “in no way” connected to the Romford Conservatives with whom he shares the council chamber.
It follows the announcement of the group’s candidates for the 2014 Havering Council elections.
In a statement to the Recorder, Cllr Steven Kelly (Emerson Park) said: “We are the association responsible for delivering the service within Hornchurch and Upminster, and are in no way connected to the Romford Conservatives.”
Long-running tensions at the heart of the Romford Conservatives have seen cabinet members complaining to Tory HQ about the way candidates are selected, and three Havering Councillors quit the group last month to join Ukip.
By contrast, Cllr Kelly said the Hornchurch and Upminster group was “very united” and “work harmoniously to help the vulnerable and general members of the public”.
