Hornchurch and District Allotment Society is preparing to dig in to an £8,000 lottery grant that will mean some long-overdue roof repairs.
The £8,384 from the Big Lottery Fund, announced today, will pay for contractors HBS Ltd to fit a “liquid roof” to keep out persistent leaks that plague the large “trading hut” where produce is sold and supplies are kept.
The work will also seal off the asbestos in the roof, making it safe to keep.
Secretary Bob Rand said: “The management committee is delighted with this grant, that will secure the roof of our main trading hut for a minimum of 15 years.
“Grants are very welcome because they keep our rents down – and these continue to be among the lowest in Greater London.
“Our trading hut is open to the general public upon them joining the society at minimal cost whereupon they can purchase garden supplies at the same beneficial prices as members.”
