A teenager has been arrested after a stand off with armed police in Hornchurch.

At around 11.50 this morning (Monday, November 5) police spotted an 18-year-old who was wanted on suspicion of firearm offences - driving a BMW.

Police chased the car to Strathmore Gardens where he tried to escape.

Armed police and a police helicopter were sent to the scene.

The teenager then came out of the property and was arrested.

He has now been taken to a police station in East London.

Police enquiries continue.

Nearby school, Harrow Lodge Primary sent out a message to parents to reassure them that the “emergency is over”.

A spokeswoman from the school said: “Your children are happy and safe and have little knowledge of the drama that has taken place.

“The roads are still closed but the police assured us that they will be open by 3pm for you to collect you children.”
