Woman recreates childhood photo at Romford Fire Station open day

People often talk about reliving their childhood - but few actually get to do it.

Joanne Peacock, 26, was fortunate enough to do so when she visited Romford Fire Station on Saturday armed with a 21-year-old photograph, and her mother, Alison.

The task was simple - find an engine, a helmet and a pair of trousers and ask the firemen if they could recreate a pose from 1993, when Joanne was five.

Engine-ered by Alison, of Ayr Way, Rise Park, who keeps the original on her kitchen cupboard at home, the results of the challenge are reminiscent of the Tom Hanks classic, Big.

“I asked Joanne if she fancied it,” said Alison. “She was here for the weekend and we saw the open day was on. She’s quite outgoing so she said yes, and asked a fireman if we could do it. They agreed, and said to stand in front of the engine.”

“Another fireman came over and got more into it,” added Joanne, now a fashion designer in Brighton. “He got me the trousers, which actually fit this time. I think I pull it off.”

One crew member even suggested the helmet in the old photograph could have been his - the only thing missing was Matthew, Joanne’s brother, who was “too embarrassed” to recreate his hose-holding pose from the same day back in ‘93.

But Alison is planning to dig out an old photo of husband Mike and create a family album, after the weekend activities brought back fond memories for her.

“I can still see the likeness, time has flown by,” she said. “I do remember the old picture and having to lift her up and put her into the leggings. Maybe in another 20 years we can do it again!”

Joanne instantly uploaded the photos side by side onto her Facebook, where she received between “40 and 50 likes.”
