The Trayler wedding, in 1904

Take a glimpse into the past.

We want you to share old photographs with readers.

They could be of local landmarks, residents or family members.

This week, we feature a wedding picture from 1904, sent in by Hornchurch resident, Derek Trayler, 80.

He said: “Our family was living in Leytonstone at the time but moved to Chadwell Heath after the First World War.

“My uncle, the groom, is Herbert Trayler (tall chap in the centre) and his bride Gertrude. Herbert was a policeman and the fourth son. Two of his brothers had already emigrated to Canada. All the Trayler ladies made their own dresses and hats.

“Grandma in the front row was dressed in red but appears black in the photo as the photographic emulsions were not sensitive to red.

“My oldest cousin was in the picture but you can’t see her as she was not born until thee months later that year. Her expectant mother was in the front row.

“My father is the little boy in the sailor suit on the left of the picture. He was wounded in Gallipoli and one of his brothers in the Canadian army was wounded in France but all survived the war.

“The photograph was taken by my maternal grandfather, John Blake Hollow.
