The NHS is encouraging people to register to donate their organs and speak to family members about their wishes.

In Greater London, 76 people died due to the shortage of organs in the last year, while 1,949 are awaiting a transplant.

Dr Atul Aggarwal, chair of Havering Clinical Commissioning Group and GP, said: “We are encouraging people to speak to their family and friends about organ donation. Family refusal is the biggest obstacle for donating. It’s important that your family understand your wishes, in case the time comes to donate.

“I encourage people from all ethnic backgrounds to register. Not everyone who donates is a match to those who are waiting for life changing surgery. This is why we need as many people, from as many different backgrounds, to register their wishes.”

Nationally 27 per cent of patients waiting for life-saving surgery are from African, African-Caribbean and south Asian backgrounds. However because donations from these communities are low, on average they will wait a year longer for a transplant.
