A Hornchurch pub is set to get a £70,000 makeover this month after it was bought by a national pub company - though residents fear it will “cheapen” the historic building.

The Good Intent, in South End Road, will close temporarily next week while the extensive refurbishments take place, including “flame grill inspired décor, new furniture and kitchen equipment”.

The transformation will be completed quickly, with the pub reopening as a Flaming Grill restaurant focusing on providing great value steaks and grills on sizzling hot skillets.

The Good Intent’s general manager, Claire O’Mahoney, said: “My team and I are really excited about the new features of the pub, especially the new menu.

“We’re sure that regulars and new guests alike will be impressed with the improved look and feel of the Good Intent.”

The idea has not impressed some, though.

Valerie Fairweather is one of several residents to write to the Spirit Group to try and dissuade the company from going ahead with the work, and is particularly unhappy with the thought of the Flaming Grill orange decor being used.

She said: “Can we really allow an important historic building like the Good Intent to be cheapened by a disgusting orange facade? It is little short of vandalism.”

As part of the transformation there will also be eight new jobs open to people wanting to join the team.
