As a result of a campaign to reduce the number of patients developing pressure ulcers while staying at Queen’s and King George Hospitals 12 wards have celebrated 100 days with no new cases.

The Pressure Ulcers Should by History campaign began in April and saw the number of sores reported fall by 36 per cent in three months, compared to the previous year.

Bev Wilson, nurse consultant in the tissue viability team, said: “We have seen very encouraging results since we started our campaign, however, we know there is more work to be done. We have been working incredibly hard with ward staff to ensure that we drive down the occurrence of these distressing wounds.”

Pressure ulcers are wounds caused by placing sustained pressure on a particular part of the body.

Staff at the two Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals will now aim to have no patients develop sores on their wards for 200 and 365 days.
