A 33-year-old cyclist was hospitalised on Friday after a car door opened into him in London Road, Romford.

The collision took place after 9am at the junction of the A118 and Burlington Avenue.

London road was closed in both directions for nearly two hours as a result of the crash.

This is the second time the Recorder has reported on a car hitting a cyclist in London Road in the last month.

The cyclist who was hit last week received leg injuries and was taken to an east London hospital in a “serious condition”.

Traffic officers investigated the incident but made no arrests.

The cyclist has now been released from hospital and it is thought that he will make a full recovery.

In July, the Recorder reported on how a 27-year-old biker was sent flying into the air after a car hit him on London Road. The cyclist caught the incident on his helmet-mounted camera.

The fortunate survivor, Jack Thoburn, of Billericay, walked off largely unscathed but said he was lucky it was not worse.

“A few seconds later and I would have hit the side of the car and could have broken my neck,” he said.

The video footage went viral within days of the story being published and has now been viewed by nearly 1.4 million people worldwide.

An insurance company disputed that the crash was the drivers fault until Mr Thoburn produced the video footage. He then promptly received a payout for a new bike.

Lord Alan Sugar saw the footage and tweeted “bloody hell, that’s one lucky cyclist and one terrible driver”.
