Dustbins, hosepipes and plastic food containers were just some of the “instruments” that formed part of a stomp-style orchestra last week.

The annual Royal Liberty School Junk Orchestra competition took place on Friday, featuring the whole of Year 7 performing on instruments made from recycled household materials.

Each class from the school in Upper Brentwood Road, Romford, had their own ochestra and were tasked with impressing judge and musician Malcolm Henderson in the battle to be crowned champions.

The eventual winners were class 7x1, conducted by Douglas Boakye, who Malcolm praised for their “amazing ensemble.”

“They were completely organised, perfect in time, had brilliant instruments (including and had a home-made trumpet with moveable funnels, made by George Dodkins).”

Five prizes were given for the best home-made instruments, and Di Russell, head of music at the school, said the standard was “very high.”

“I am looking forward to seeing what next year’s year 7 will come up with,” she added.
