Havering community and police consultative group prepares to say goodbye

A community and police consultative group will hold a celebratory farewell event tomorrow evening before closing on April 1.

Havering CPCG have been operating for over 20 years, after it was recommended there should be a method of regular consultation between members of the police and the community.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson made the decision to replace the group with a safer neighbourhood board, a change which is being implemented in all boroughs across the capital.

“It means that the community aren’t going to be as well involved” said Linda Van den Hende, Secretary of Havering CPCG.

“There is a concern that the community will be less well engaged”.

Havering CPCG holds quarterly meetings throughout the year and is made up of representatives from voluntary groups in Havering including faith groups, disability groups and victim support.

“It’s a bit of a sad day,” said Linda.

However, the group wanted to maintain some positivity and members will meet tomorrow evening to celebrate all they have achieved.

Linda said: “We thought, lets have a celebratory event”.

She explained that the evening will consist of drinks and nibbles and that while there would be a few speeches, it would not be too formal.

“It’s really just an opportunity for the people who have been involved over the years to get together and say thanks very much for the work you have done,” she said.

The event will take place at Hornchurch Library, North Street, Hornchurch at 6.30pm. Those wishing to attend can email cpcghavering@yahoo.com or call 01708 340155.
