Havering school does Hollywood musical hit

Award-winning teachers at a Havering school are to stage a school production of a hit Hollywood film with pupils next week.

Since October the cast, crew and band of more than 70 students and staff at St Edward’s Church of England School and Sixth Form College in London Road, Romford have been rehearsing for popular musical “Hairspray”.

Originally released in 1988 as a romantic musical comedy the film was remade in 2007 and starred John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah and teen-throb Zac Efron.

“Rehearsals have been great fun and the band are fab, they are led by Mrs Yeomans, head of music,” said popular drama teacher Sarah Allen, 35, who won a National Pearson Teaching Award last year.

“The costumes are colourful and larger than life and have been created by Mrs Wake, who won a Jack Petchey award last year for her contribution to the school shows,” she added.

Based in 1962, the show is about quirky, plus-sized teenager, Tracey Turnblad who has one dream - to dance on the “Corny Collins Show”.

Taught dance moves by other school pupils, she wins a spot and turns into an overnight star, to the anger of her rival Amber and her mother who produces the show.

The Broadway production of the show won a Tony award and the cast and crew at St Edward’s is sure to do it proud.

Three performances will be held at the school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 7pm
