Paralympic swimmer Amy Marren was among those celebrating their GCSE results today after achieving an impressive set of all As and A*s.

Amy, who turned 16 last week, said she had been “really nervous” heading into Hall Mead School in Marlborough Gardens, Upminster, this morning to pick up the results.

“I was nervous but I knew that I had worked as hard as I could,” she said.

Earlier this month the teenager, who was born without her right hand, beat GB teammate Stephanie Millward to take gold in the SM9 200m individual medley at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven.

She said she had to fit revision around her busy training schedule of 18 to 20 hours a week.

Unlike most teenagers, Amy is up at 5am every morning to spend two hours in the pool before heading into school.

“I started revising in November so I wouldn’t panic as much in June,” she said.

Amy, whose younger sister Georgia is in Year 8 at the school, said was excited to start sixth form at Campion School, taking A-levels in Biology, English Literature and Government and Politics.

“My school has been brilliant. I’m sad to leave it,” she said.

“What I like about Campion is it felt so much like Hall Mead – it was quite family-orientated.

“I’m quite sociable so I’m looking forward to a fresh start and getting to know new people.”

Hall Mead head teacher Simon London congratulated the “hardworking and positive” Year 11s at the school.

“I comment them – they are a really nice bunch,” he said.

“We’ve got pupils who work hard to achieve their grades.”

He said results were consistent with last year’s, with 72 per cent achieving five A* to C grades including English and maths.

And the percentage of top results rose, with 26pc of all exams taken being graded A* or A, up from 20pc last year.
