Havering Council says that feedback shows its cleaning campaign is having a real impact around the borough.

Cleaner Havering has seen a range of measures carried out.

As part of the project, around 30 volunteers, along with council staff and others, gathered in Elm Park to improve the town centre.

Over 300 bags of rubbish and leaves were collected, and Helen Tompkins, a resident of Elm Park since 1937, said: “It was fantastic to see The Broadway being transformed to its former glory.”

The project will cost the council around £250,000 and was launched in August at the Havering Show.

It is a response to the council’s Spring Clean survey which reported its findings in April, citing three main issues for the council to address: dog mess; littering; and vandalism.

Along with an investment in extra brooms, gloves and other common equipment, the council has also bought 16 new vacuums, to pick up broken glass and other substances.

Council leader, Cllr Michael White, said that while a lot had been done, there was still more to do.

He added: “We’re committed to creating a cleaner, greener and safer borough.”
