Following national reports about the supposed dangers of cleaning products, freshly painted rooms and new cars to pregnant women, GPs in Havering have reassured mums-to-be that hand creams are unlikely to be a health risk.

People may have read about a report from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) suggesting pregnant women should steer clear of air fresheners, freshly painted rooms and even newly purchased cars.

But public health experts have reiterated there is no evidence to suggest that the chemicals in products such as hand creams or shower gel are a risk to health.

Family doctors in Havering say the best thing pregnant women can do for their unborn children is eat healthily and avoid smoking and alcohol.

Havering Clinical Commissioning Group chair Dr Atul Aggarwal said: “Avoiding chemicals such as pesticides and fungicides is a good idea but simply stopping using any hand creams or shower gels is not the answer.

“The NHS is here to help so if you find out you are pregnant, book an appointment early on with local maternity services so you can start planning for your care, get a vital 13-week scan and discuss the type of birth you want.”
