A former Havering college student is hoping to pursue a career in fashion after winning a prestigious award.

Yan Zhang, who did a fashion degree course at Havering College of Further and Higher Education scooped the Rising Star Silver Shears Award at the Golden Shears Awards 2013.

The Golden Shears Awards are known as the Oscars of tailoring.

The 22-year-old from East Ham impressed the judges with her tweed jacket and pleated miniskirt.

Yan was presented with her gong at a glittering ceremony held at the historic Merchant Tailor’s Hall in London’s Thread needle Street with proud mum, Muxian, and Havering College Fashion lecturer Marie Loney in the audience.

She is now looking for a dream job in fashion.

Yan said: “I would really like a job in fashion tailoring. The BA Fashion course at Havering College included a major project on tailoring with our suits being showcased at Alternative Fashion Week in Spitalfields.”
